When a modem answers and then hangs up immediately, this usually indicates
a problem between the two modems; this sort of problem is quite difficult to
pin down.
In Windows, there are always several ways to do the same thing; sometimes
one works better than another. So before we dig deeper, why don't you try
using the "set port com1, set modem type xxx" approach, rather than TAPI?
If it works, we've saved ourselves some time.
If it doesn't, please send email to kermit-support@columbia.edu with details:
the type of modem you have, the version of Windows, etc, plus exactly what
you mean by "hang".
